About Infant Hearing Loss

Today, there are no communication limits for Maine infants with hearing loss.

With exciting, proven auditory-oral rehabilitation, Maine children who are deaf or hearing impaired can read, sing, tell jokes and stories, create art, enjoy music and learn about the world around them, just like their hearing peers.

hear ME now! is committed to helping Maine’s children with hearing loss reach their full potential.

  • Infant hearing loss is more common than you may think. Of every 1,000 children born in the United States, 2 to 4 of them have a hearing loss, and 90% of all children with hearing loss are born to hearing parents.
  • Early intervention makes all the difference. Long before a child is actually speaking – the critical period seems to be the first six months – the auditory brain is busily building the language centers the child will need for life.
  • With hearing technology (such as cochlear implants and hearing aids) and early intervention from Listening and Spoken Language Specialist like the staff at hear ME now, children who are deaf and hard of hearing are learning to listen, talk and thrive in ways that were not thought possible just a few years ago.

Our goal is to provide parents with the tools they need to understand their child’s hearing loss, make informed choices about educational options and find the path that is right for their family.
