Auditory Verbal Therapy
Thanks to a generous grant from the Davis Foundation and gifts from individuals, hear ME now! is proud to announce that children who are deaf or hard of hearing have another communication option. hear ME now!, Maine’s Oral Deaf Learning Center will now offer Auditory Verbal Therapy in addition to its Auditory Oral programming.
Auditory Verbal Therapy (AVT) is a spoken language option for children and adults who are deaf or hard of hearing. The foundation of Auditory Verbal approach is very similar to that of auditory oral therapy. The major difference is a parent oriented approach. Parents are involved in their child’s therapy as their Auditory Verbal therapist guides them in how to facilitate the child’s listening, speech and language development at home. These children will attend preschools with their peers who have normal hearing without the need for a sign language interpreter.
The Auditory Verbal Center at hear ME now! will provide families from local communities as well as statewide with access to instruction and mentoring so that their children have the option of learning to listen and speak in their own neighborhoods, surrounded by their families and friends.
